On June 1, 1907 Myra married Charles Miller of Marshall County. To this union four children were born: Roy, Don, Lola, and another son who died in infancy. The couple made their home on a farm near Buffalo Lake in southeast Marshall County. Miller served on the local school board from 1922 through 1938 and was active in community affairs. In addition to photography, she enjoyed oil painting. Her paintings were exhibited at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron where she won several awards. After her death, her family donated 11 of her oil paintings to the South Dakota Memorial Art Center in Brookings. Miller was a self-taught photographer. Because she had one of the few cameras in her area, people often asked her to take photographs for them. Her son Don noted that she was often called upon to take photographs of deceased individuals, something she did not enjoy doing. The collection consists of nearly 3,000 items, including glass plate negatives, photographs and postcards. The images are largely views of the family farm, Myra's children, and family activities as well as a few portrait images. |
