Fort Sully

The first Fort Sully was built in 1863 on the east side of the Missouri River across from Farm Island, near present day Pierre. The fort was a base for the soldiers stationed there during the Sully Expeditions. By 1866 the fort was considered in poor condition and not fit for the soldiers quarters. The fort was disbanded in 1866 after a site for a new fort had been determined. The new Fort Sully was constructed 28 miles above Pierre on the east side of the Missouri River. Due to the proximity to the Cheyenne River Reservation, the soldiers at this fort were charged with keeping order between the Indians and the settlers. Fort Sully was disbanded in 1894 and the buildings were sold to settlers at an auction.
