Alice Vorhees Diary, H99-018

"Monday morn-is some cloudy and foggy threatens rain but we don’t need it yet. Considerable water in our cellar and potatoes are swimming." March 29, 1897

Alice Vorhees was born in 1854 in Wisconsin. She married Ezra Vorhees and they moved to South Dakota in 1883. Alice and her family lived on a farm in Wessington Springs in Jerauld County. Alice and Ezra had six children: Clara, Arthur, Blanche, Archie, Lester and Inez. The three oldest children were born in Iowa before the family moved to South Dakota. Alice’s diary starts on March 16th, 1897, and continues daily through July 13th, 1897. Each day Alice noted what the weather was for that day and the activities or events of the day. She writes of visits to neighbors, farm chores, trips to town, and sickness in the family.

"This is a nice pleasant day and very warm. Well we Lena and I worked pretty hard today getting the carpet up and clearing out moving things and white washing." June 18, 1897
