Event: "Sportsman's Paradise: Hunting and Fishing in South Dakota" Exhibit
 

This new exhibit examines the history of hunting and fishing and the vital role hunters and anglers play in game conservation and management. Take a look at early conservation efforts, learn how SD pheasant hunting grew from a one-day season in 1919 to the current 79-day season, and view a variety of artifacts including a large mammoth bone, buffalo hide and items made from buffalo, and cannons used to net birds for banding. Also featured is a share-your-story section where visitors can write down their personal tales of the “one that got away', and visitors can practice identifying rubber models of SD fish at a catch-and-release station.

Event: Archaeology & Historic Preservation Month
 

South Dakota Archaeology & Historic Preservation Month was created to foster public appreciation and understanding in order to preserve South Dakota’s past for future generations. Our state's cultural heritage is rich and diverse as represented by the thousands of archaeological and historical sites, historic buildings, and landscapes throughout our state. The protection and preservation of these sites, buildings, and landscapes are intended to provide educational, scientific, and economic benefits for all citizens.

Event: Milk the Cow Contest
 

During "See South Dakota Week" the Cultural Heritage Center is sponsoring a Milk the Cow Contest. Bring your Kindergartener - 5th grader to the museum to participate. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the week to the winner from each grade.

Event: What's New on the State Archives Website?
 

Chelle Somsen, South Dakota State Archivist, will discuss the recent additions to the archives website, such as the cemetery database, the biographical index, and the 1885 civil war census. The discussion will include helpful hints on how to search and what to do with what you find. Please feel free to bring a bag lunch to eat while enjoying this program.

Event: Verendrye Monument National Historic Landmark Rededication Ceremony - SD Archaeology & Historic Preservation Month Program
 

Governor M. Michael Rounds will commemorate the 1743 Verendrye journey as the first recorded visit of European people in the area.  A lead tablet, placed by the expedition on a hillside as evidence the region had been explored for France, was discovered in 1913 by a group of Fort Pierre teenagers.  The rededication ceremony will recognize rehabilitation work recently completed at the site as well as the unveiling of two new historic interpretive markers.

Event: Preservation Thursday: Adams Art - Sound Recording and American Popular Memory
  William Howland Kenney, professor emeritus of History and American Studies at Kent State University, will discuss the connection between sound recordings and American popular memory, shedding light on the significance of musical entertainment on American culture. Dr. Kenney is an Organization of American Historians Distinguished Lecturer.

Event: A Taste of Preservation Workshop / 70th Birthday of the Colton House - SD Archaeology & Historic Preservation Month Program
 

The Clay County Historic Preservation Commission celebrates SD Archaeology & Historic Preservation Month with a special event noting the recent inclusion of The Colton House on the National Register of Historic Places. Homeowner Sue Christensen has lovingly restored this distinctive property to its original character. In recognition of her efforts and marking the occasion of its 70th year, she and the Clay County Historic Preservation Commission will unveil a plaque identifying this honor. The celebration will include informative talks and demonstrations by experts on topics related to buying, owning, and caring for older homes. Please join us to learn more about National Register and State Historic Preservation programs, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Domestic Archaeology, confronting moisture in older homes, window restoration, and many other relevant subjects.

Event: Save America's Treasures Grant Deadline
 

Save America’s Treasures grants are available for preservation and/or conservation work on nationally significant intellectual and cultural artifacts and historic structures and sites. Grants are awarded to Federal, state, local, and tribal government entities, as well as nonprofit organizations, through a competitive matching-grant program, The Save America's Treasures program received the 2007 Keystone Award, the highest award given to organizations outside the architectural field for outstanding contributions to society, from the American Institute of Architects and the American Architectural Foundation.

Event: Green Strategies for Historic Buildings - SD Archaeology & Historic Preservation Month Program
 

Sponsored in conjunction with SD Archaeology & Historic Preservation Month. Discuss practical applications of using green building strategies for historic structures. The environmental goal of "reduce, reuse, recycle" can enhance the capital cost competitiveness of preservation projects. Review the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards used to assess building performance. This seminar is useful for facility & project managers, engineers, property owners, developers, preservation architect, & design professionals. AIA members can receive AIA/CES learning units.

Event: If Headstones Could Talk - A Walking Tour of Mt. Hope Cemetery
 

How would you like to meet some residents of early Watertown. This tour of Mt. Hope Cemetery will have guides leading you to graves of early locals with re-enactors performing as historic figures General George Carpenter, businessman Charles Goss, painter John Banvard, livery stable owner Oscar Vaux, Codington County's first white woman Etta Tarbell, & South Dakota's first governor Arthur Mellette. It is hoped that this fundraiser for the Mellette House will become an annual event.

On the day of the event, ticket holders will receive a coupon which can be redeemed at Redlin Art Center Gift Shop for a free print. For an additional $20, the Gift Shop will upgrade this to a framed print.

Event: The Section 106 Essentials Seminar
  The Section 106 Essentials is a two-day course designed for those who are new to Section 106 review or those who want a refresher on its basic operation. Taught by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), this course explains the requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, which applies any time a federal, federally assisted, or federally approved activity might affect a property listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The course is geared toward federal, state, or local government officials, tribal representatives, or private consultants who encounter preservation-related law in their job, and members of the public with an interest in historic preservation.

Event: Rededication of the State Capitol Cornerstone
 

The celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the laying of the Capitol cornerstone will duplicate as closely as possible the original ceremony when the cornerstone was laid. In 1908, the statewide Grand Lodge of Masons of SD conducted part of the ceremony to certify that the foundation was firm, assuring a sound foundation for government. The officers of the Grand Lodge have been asked to do once again ceremonially verify that the Capitol is sound. There will also be historic displays in the 1st floor Capitol Rotunda on the on the Capitol grounds.

Event: Archaeology Camp
  Weeklong camp for 20 children ages 9-12 or entering the 3rd through 7th grades. Campers will participate in a real archaeological dig in Deadwood led by professionals in the field. Not only will children gain a thorough understanding of the archaeological process, but they will take hikes from the excavation site to related locations, learn to read & use a compass, visit the State Archaeological Research Center in Rapid City & have daily lessons from professionals ranging in scope from historic preservation to mapping techniques.

Event: Forum 2008 - The National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC) Annual Conference

Event: "Sportsman's Paradise: Hunting and Fishing in South Dakota" Exhibit
 

This new exhibit examines the history of hunting and fishing and the vital role hunters and anglers play in game conservation and management. Take a look at early conservation efforts, learn how SD pheasant hunting grew from a one-day season in 1919 to the current 79-day season, and view a variety of artifacts including a large mammoth bone, buffalo hide and items made from buffalo, and cannons used to net birds for banding. Also featured is a share-your-story section where visitors can write down their personal tales of the “one that got away', and visitors can practice identifying rubber models of SD fish at a catch-and-release station.

Event: Deadwood Grant deadline - SD State Historic Preservation Office
 

This program is designed to encourage large-scale restoration or rehabilitation of historic properties by individuals, organizations or public agencies. Grants for work beginning January 1, 2009 will be awarded in amounts ranging from $1,000 to $25,000. The grant amount must be matched on a dollar-for-dollar basis from nonfederal and nonstate sources. Nonprofit organizations will be allowed to use in-kind services for one-half of their match. Funding for the program is from Deadwood gaming revenue earmarked by state law for historic preservation projects throughout the state and distributed by the State Historical Society.

Event: Dakota Territory & Early Statehood - 16th Annual West River History Conference
  Guest speakers, special entertainment & displays, book signings, and selected rare booksellers booths will be a part of the festive weekend of historical activity focused on the heritage of the region. Friday night's keynote speaker will be Sioux Falls historical re-enactor John Timm portraying Governor Arthur Mellette, last territorial governor of Dakota & 1st governor of South Dakota. The conference theme ties in with the concurrent exhibit at the Journey Museum entitled, "Open Range", which focuses on the cattle industry in western South Dakota from 1877-1906.

Event: Property Tax Moratorim deadline - SD State Historic Preservation Office
 

The State Property Tax Moratorium is available for buildings listed on the National or State Register of Historic Places and rehabilitated in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. The moratorium places an eight-year freeze on the property tax assessment; during the eight-year period, the property tax assessment may not be increased due to the certified rehabilitation work undertaken on the building.  The 2008 application will cover work done between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008.
