Death: October 20, 1898; Deadwood, South Dakota
Governor Charles H. Sheldon argued for thrift
in funding public institutions, and dealt with financial problems as tax
collections did not meet the States' needs. The defalcation of the state
treasurer necessitated straightening out the states' finances during his second
term.
