Using the State Archives Newspaper CollectionDo you need to use the State Archives newspaper collection? The collection is open to the public from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday-Friday and the first Saturday of each month, except holidays. There is no fee to use the microfilm but copies are $1.06 per page (includes sales tax). You may also purchase copies of microfilm for $42.40 per reel (includes sales tax). To order, send a check for the proper amount to the State Archives or phone the research room and give a staff member your credit card information. SD State Archives Additionally, newspaper microfilm may be borrowed through interlibrary loan. The State Archives does not loan microfilm directly to individuals. For the best service, refer to the online newspaper database. Then give the title, dates, and reel numbers to your local librarian, along with prepayment of $8.48 per reel. Loans are made for 30 days and 1-4 reels may be borrowed at a time per user. If you would like, State Archives staff will provide research assistance in locating obituaries and other newspaper articles. Staff limitations prevent doing lengthy searches, however.
