Executive Proclamation

State of South Dakota
Office of the Governor

Whereas, History provides tools for defining our diverse cultural identities and understanding our past; and,

Whereas, Archival institutions collect, organize, preserve, and make available records that document the history of the state of South Dakota and the plains region for the education and enrichment of present and future generations; and,

Whereas, Archives have a responsibility to provide public access to their records, and it is the goal of archives to increase public awareness of the role archives play in providing knowledge about the historical and cultural heritage of South Dakota; and,

Whereas, In addition to the State Archives, there are numerous county, municipal, university, and private archives in South Dakota which cooperate for the preservation and accessibility of all the state's documentary heritage; and,

Whereas, We recognize the value of South Dakota's archives - our historical records and the many ways they enrich our lives:

Now, Therefore, I, M. Michael Rounds, Governor of the state of South Dakota, do hereby proclaim October 2007 as

ARCHIVES MONTH

in South Dakota, and encourage our citizens to celebrate the value of South Dakota's historical records.
