Rapid City Indian School and Sioux Sanatorium One of 28 off-reservation boarding schools built and operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the school existed from 1898-1933 to serve Indian children of the Northern plainsincluding Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, Shoshone, Arapaho, Crow, and Flathead. The buildings were later used to house the Sioux Sanatorium, an institution established to treat Indians with tuberculosis. Arrangement of this series is chronological with the exception of the decimal correspondence which is arranged according to the local modification of the Office of Indian Affairs field service subject decimal code of December 11, 1925.
Included in the correspondence are letters sent to the Commissioner of India Affairs from the superintendents, and chief medical officers. The decimal correspondence consists of letters sent to and received by the agency superintendents, and medical officers. Of particular historical interest are: a Sioux San Sun newsletter for June and July 1948 containing a sermon written entirely in the Dakota Sioux language; two letters discussing the appraisal and purchase of Sioux Indian relics from J.A. Anderson in 1938; and two letters from Senator Francis Case concerning WPA construction projects on Sanatorium property. There are also files containing Department of Interior circulars and bulletins, and public relations files containing Bureau of Indian Affairs Information Service Public Notices.
