Fort Randall

Fort Randall was established by General W.S. Harney in 1856 about seventy five miles above Yankton on he Missouri River. It included numerous buildings such as hospital, guard house, store houses, magazine, pump house and church. The chapel was constructed in 1875 by the soldiers from chalkstone. The structure contained the church, post library and an I.O.O.F Hall.  It was abandoned as a military fort in 1884 and completely abandoned in 1892.

            Papers, 1890-1935. DeLand, a lawyer, historian and author, corresponded with Major Frederick T. Wilson, Adjutant General’s Office, War Department, about the location of Fort Tecumseh, Fort Pierre, Fort Sully, Fort Meade, Fort Randall and Fort Thompson. 3339A

            Papers, November 14, 1892. A group of officers at Fort Randall met to determine the value and condition of the buildings on the post. This includes a description of each building. (3240 MF)

            Quartermaster Records, 1876-1882. Fort Randall Quartermaster Horace Baxter Quimby’s papers detail information about the provisions, men and buildings during his service at the fort. Box 3570B

Waldron, William (H75-088)

            Letter, 1862. Waldron was with the 14th Regiment of the Iowa Volunteers that was assigned to duty at Fort Randall.  His letter describes the 500 mile march from Iowa to Fort Randall and the arrest of Captain Pattee by Major Lyman. Box 3541B
