Fort Thompson was built in 1863 after the War of the Outbreak. It was named for Col. Clark W. Thompson who built the fort. DeLand, Charles Edmund (H69-005) Papers, 1890-1935. DeLand, a lawyer, historian and author, corresponded with Major Frederick T. Wilson, Adjutant General’s Office, War Department, about the location of Fort Tecumseh, Fort Pierre, Fort Sully, Fort Meade, Fort Randall and Fort Thompson.
