Researching at the Archives

We will be pleased to help you schedule a visit to the State Archives. Here are some suggestions to help you plan your visit.

  • Class size is limited to ten students per visit. Larger groups could schedule a trip to the museum on the same day and divide the class into smaller groups.
  • Before you come, discuss a research topic and appropriate behavior with your students.
  • Focus on a topic suitable for the grade level
  • Have students prepare a list of questions which may help in their research
  • Use inside voices
  • Walk - don't run
  • Look and touch appropriately
  • Do not bring food or drink into the Archives
  • Plan shopping at the Heritage Store or museum visits before or after your archives visit
  • Please be at the Center at your scheduled time

    Once you arrive:

    • Check in at the reception desk
    • Send one person to the research room to register the entire group
    • Read and explain the rules of the research room
    • Explore the many historical treasures within the archives collections

Consultation: Archives staff can assist teachers to identify and select archival source materials that are appropriate for class use. We recommend that teachers seek a consultation prior to scheduling a class visit.

Use of Collections: Original archival materials may be viewed in the research room; they may not be checked out. Some materials have been microfilmed to make them more accessible to the public. Microfilm may be borrowed through inter-library loan; consult the current fee schedule for prices.
