Properties of History Exploring South Dakota’s Historic Places |
Historic places stand as physical links to our past. These Properties of History “offer experiences and information that help make the past real for anyone who visits or studies them”. Properties of History highlights a small portion of the many historic properties in the state focusing on the importance of preserving our history by holding onto these places. It goes beyond the facade of “old” places and explores the histories they contain.
The exhibition explores who protects historic places and what makes them so important. The visitor will learn about the two main organizations responsible for protecting and maintaining historic places; the National Register of Historic Places and the State Historic Preservation Office. Visitors will see the role of each organization and see that it is the role of the historic preservation officers to help protect and maintain properties of cultural, environmental, educational, aesthetic, and historical value that are important to us as South Dakotans. Visitors will learn the details of valuable properties and learn that a place can be important for several reasons. Historic properties from throughout the state are featured and examined for their historical significance.
Today it is easy to overlook the importance of historic places within our towns, cities, and state. Properties of History attempts to raise awareness of the state’s heritage and to share the sites, stories, and special places with local citizens and the visiting public. The exhibition consists of 15 text panels of historic photographs, documents, and objects within 5 pop-up units (3 text panels per unit), with an additional resource guide of activities.
This exhibition travels with a resource guide, providing activities and reference information.
