Clay County Historical Society, Inc.

FOUNDED

 

Organized in the late 1960s after acquiring the Austin Whittemore house. Mr. Horace Austin built the Victorian home in 1882. The home served the family well and was going to be torn down. With the help of many Clay County residents, the house was saved and today is a beautiful museum.

MEETING SCHEDULE

 

Held at the Austin Whittemore House in Vermillion, 7:30 p.m. the fourth Thursday of each month.

ACTIVITIES

 

Nominated for Governor’s Awards for History in 2000.

The mission statement is: to discover and collect artifacts, materials and oral histories of Clay County; to provide for the preservation of such materials and make them accessible to all who wish to study and examine them; to undertake the preservation of historic buildings and markers; to publish historical articles; to hold meetings and discussions to awaken public interest in local history; to acquire and hold real and personal property; and to do all acts necessary and incidental and related to general purposes.

The society maintains the Austin-Whittemore House Museum in Vermillion. Summer tours are offered each weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The hours are from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and weekends by appointment.

An Ice Cream Social was held June 24th at the Austin Whittemore House Lawn with several members of the Whittemore family in attendance.  Each December the society organizes a Candlelight Tour of Historic Homes in the Vermillion area.  An Attic Treasures Sale was held May 1st with the proceeds going toward repairs to the museum.  The society will raffle off two donated mantle clocks.  The gift donated by the Civic Council will be used for repairs.
