The purpose of the
organization is to preserve pre-settlement, Danish and other
pioneer-settlers, and the continuing, heritage and history of Viborg, SD,
and surrounding “Daneville” area settlements, in an area approximately 6-8
miles North and South, 10 miles East, and 16 miles west, of Viborg. DHA
wishes to be inclusive, while respecting other museums, such as Hurley (H.H.Soc.)
and Centerville (Schmeidt, private).
To
establish and maintain a museum to preserve and display artifacts and
archives, to preserve historical buildings and sites, and to enable
historical research.
To
provide historical information to the public through meetings and displays,
a regular news and information column in the local weekly newspaper, The
Viborg Enterprise; and other media.
Even prior to the organization, DHA was promised the gift of a
historic building as its first museum building: a 1940’s-50’s hatchery;
1960’s-80’s Veterinary Clinic. This was a gift of the family of the late Dr.
Ronald Lockwood, DMV. The deed, dated October 1, 2003, was received October
16, 2003.
Open Sundays and Major Holidays. Hours are 10 am to 5 pm or call. |
