ACTIVITIES
|
The society's museum includes three buildings. The central building is located on the grounds of the Douglas County Courthouse in Armour and originally housed the offices of auditor and register of deeds in 1902. This building was placed on the National Register of Historic Sites in 1976. In 1981, the society moved an 1884 country school to county property just east of the museum. The third building, known as "The Railroad House," was added in 1988 and is furnished and decorated in the period of the early 1900s. These buildings are open to the public each Friday afternoon and holidays from Memorial Day to Labor Day or any other time by appointment.
Other projects have included the publication of a Douglas County history book, "The Little Giant," by Robert
Karolevitz, in 1983; having four blocks of Main Street in Armour placed on the National Register in 1976; and placing historic site markers at Grandview and Huston, early county
townsites. Each spring since 1983 all second graders and their teachers in Douglas County have been invited to attend "School Days" in the country school; this has been a popular project allowing children to relive pioneer days. A $6,000 grant from the Mary Chilton DAR Foundation enabled the society to purchase a micro-film reader in 1994; all Douglas County newspapers through 1940 are on microfilm and available to the public for research.
