The purpose of the society is to bring together those people who are interested in preserving the history of Hyde County and Highmore and also to help those interested in genealogy to trace their ancestral lines or lines of descent. Understanding the history of our community is basic to our democratic way of life, gives us a better understanding of our state and nation, and promotes a better appreciation of our American heritage.
The group published "Hyde Heritage" in 1977, a follow-up to the first "Hyde County History" book published in 1908. "Staying Power: "A Pictorial History of Hyde County" was published in 1989 as the county's project for the state centennial.
In 1983, the
society purchased the American Legion building on Main Street and turned it
into a museum. The museum has a large collection of historical items from
the county and gains more each year.
Each year on the
third Saturday in June there is an open house for Old Settlers Day. This
year, the group is releasing their recently published cookbook, “Meals and
Memories.” The book will feature recipes from the membership, as well as a
family story selection. The goals of the book are to celebrate 30 years of
the society, celebrate the members of the society past and present, and to
celebrate Hyde County and Highmore as they are today.
There
is an annual Christmas Tea each December.
The
society has a quarterly publication, "The Tumbleweeds."
Annual
dues, payable each January 1, are $7 for single membership or $10 for a
family membership.
