For Immediate Release: February 28, 2007 State Historical Society book wins national award PIERRE, S.D. -- The South Dakota State Historical Society has received another national award for one of its publications. The National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers has awarded Picturing the Past: South Dakota’s Historic Places, published by the South Dakota State Historical Society Press, an Education Project award for the 2007 Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation. Published in 2006, Picturing the Past by Jay D. Vogt, Stephen C. Rogers and Scott Myers, provides a modern look at South Dakota’s physical links to its past. The book features stunning black-and-white photographs of many of South Dakota’s historic sites, and seven essays explore the meaning and importance of historic preservation. Well-known landmarks such as the Old Minnehaha County Courthouse in Sioux Falls and the Dinosaur Park in Rapid City sit next to such less-obvious historic sites as the Flandreau Masonic Temple and the Czech Log House-Barn in Bon Homme County. Available for $29.95 plus shipping and tax, Picturing the Past can be purchased from most bookstores or ordered directly from the South Dakota State Historical Society Press.
