FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 6, 2007 Fifth Award of 2007 for South Dakota State Historical Society Books PIERRE, S.D.—The South Dakota State Historical Society has received a fifth award for its books this year. The American Association for State and Local History presented Picturing the Past: South Dakota’s Historic Places by Jay D. Vogt and Stephen C. Rogers, with photography by Scott Myers, with an Award of Merit. The authors and photographer feel genuinely humbled by the second major award for Picturing the Past. “It is a great honor to receive such a highly respected award,” said Vogt, director of the South Dakota State Historical Society. The AASLH presents Leadership in History awards in each of the 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, for work that highlights the importance of history. The awards are the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history. This award is the third AASLH award the South Dakota State Historical Society Press has received in the last three years. “Our books continue to gain widespread attention, and it is gratifying to know that South Dakota’s wonderful history is delighting people all around the country,” said Nancy Tystad Koupal, director of the Press. Picturing the Past captures the memories and personal history within South Dakota’s historic buildings in 78 dramatic black-and-white photographs. The authors provide context and relevance to the buildings and places depicted in the vivid images. It is the third volume in the Historical Preservation Series, with the fourth volume, focusing on the history of the state’s Capitol, expected in 2008. Picturing the Past is available for $29.95 plus shipping and tax. It can be purchased from most bookstores or directly from the Press by calling (605) 773-6009, or visiting www.sdshspress.com. |
