“Citadel” greets Heritage Center visitors

The statue “Citadel” has been greeting visitors to the Cultural Heritage Center since 2002. “Citadel” was created by nationally-recognized Sturgis artist Dale Lamphere in 2001 to commemorate women’s role as the citadel, or stronghold, of the prairie family, as described in “The Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck. “Citadel,” originally located near the back entrance of the State Capitol, was moved to the Cultural Heritage Center because it blends in well with the center’s prairie landscaping.
