 Archaeology |
Through the State Archaeological Research Center in Rapid City the Society maintains
the state's archaeological collections, records, and research. It also reviews all
mineral, mining, and oil and gas exploration applications and provides consultant services
to state and federal agencies. |
 Archives |
Holdings at the State Archives range from handwritten diaries, memoirs, and family
histories to the official historical records of state and local governments in South
Dakota. Various finding aids and microfilmed records make the archival collection
accessible to the public. |
 Historic
Preservation |
The Office of Historic Preservation processes requests for adding buildings and sites
to the State and National Registers of Historic Places and assists building owners with
restoration and rehabilitation plans. It works with governmental agencies at all levels
and with private organizations to develop heritage tourism and to promote historical
projects. |
 Museum |
"The South Dakota Experience" is the permanent exhibit of the Museum of the
South Dakota State Historical Society in the Cultural Heritage Center galleries and
focuses on American Indian, pioneer, political, and military history. Changing exhibits
feature special themes and events. |
