The State Historical Society offers many different
types of events and educational opportunities. Workshops, lectures, and seminars are
conducted throughout the year and are especially emphasized during the South Dakota State
Historical Society's annual meeting in the spring. Special events and exhibit openings are
also a viable part of the center's activities.

The South Dakota State Historical Society recently received a donation of
furniture. Thanks to memorial gifts from family and friends statewide given to
the South Dakota Heritage Fund in memory of former South Dakota First Lady Madge
Turner Mickelson, new hand-made oak furniture adorns the lobby of the Cultural
Heritage Center in Pierre. The furniture was purchased by the South Dakota
Heritage Fund and donated to the South Dakota State Historical Society. The
furniture includes three benches and two tables. The tables are inlaid with
Dakota granite similar to that used on the exterior of the building. They have
"South Dakota State Historical Society" and the society's Sioux Horse Effigy
symbol etched into the granite. Mrs.Mickelson, who passed away in December 2006,
was the wife of the late George T. Mickelson, South Dakota governor from
1947-1951, and mother of the late George S. Mickelson, governor from 1987-1993.
Pictured with some of the furniture are, from left, Bill Goff of High Plains
Construction in Pierre, who built the furniture; Patricia Mickelson Adam,
Mickelson's daughter; and Thomas Adam, Patricia's husband. (Photo courtesy South
