South Dakota Things to Do
The list of South Dakota things to do might not be long, but you’ll certainly enjoy checking them off.
What Can We Doooooo?
So, when your family starts whining about being on vacation with you, you need to keep them busy with something that’s at least a little exciting. Though most people don't realize it, Boston and New York are not the only two great cities in the country. South Dakota has seen its share of bloodshed and history. And you can take the entire family on a plane to find out more.
(No, they won’t be too bored by this. Just tell them that you’re going to see something that was in National Treasure.)
Here are some of the things you might want to do when you’re in the South Dakota area:
- Badlands National Park
- Black Hills National Forest
- Chief Crazy Horse Memorial
- Jewel Cave National Monument
- Lewis and Clark Trail
- Minuteman Missile National Historic Site
- Missouri National Recreational River
- Mount Rushmore National Memorial
- Wind Cave National Park
As you can see, Mount Rushmore is tucked into this list. This national monument is a huge rock sculpture in the middle of the mountains, showing the faces of presidents who have influenced the nation. It’s not a themed hotel, like your children might think. You’re not staying there overnight.
Or you might want to see the Chief Crazy Horse Memorial. This is a statue that’s not complete yet, and it hasn’t been finished in the generations it has been worked on and worked on. No one’s quite sure when and if this will ever be done.
Heading out into the nature scenery is never a bad idea when you’re on vacation. You can easily see how much of the South Dakota landscape is untouched by humans – and thankfully. There have been enough human events on the soil, it seems that South Dakota could use a break. And becoming a tourist spot is no bad thing.
Finally, the Wind Cave National Park is a fun excursion for any family. Depending on the time of year, the atmosphere conditions cause the air inside the tunnel to be sucked out or blow in. Talk about some great pictures in this cave – your entire family will want to try walking in the cave.
There are plenty of things to do when you’re in South Dakota. Sure, you might not have a beach, but you can find out about the history of an important part of the country. Same thing, really.
