MEETINGS

Annual meetings generally include field trips, workshops, reports on South Dakota archaeological activities, and a keynote speaker at the banquet. Currently four local chapters -- Sioux Falls, Northern Black Hills (Sturgis and Rapid City), Vermillion, Middle Missouri (Pierre), and Northeastern Periphery (Aberdeen and Watertown) -- exist and hold monthly meetings. Other chapters may be formed. The meeting usually includes a business session plus a guest lecture or slide show.

ACTIVITIES

The society involves professional, avocational, amateur archaeologists from South Dakota and surrounding Plains states. Membership in the Society is from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. Membership provides a quarterly newsletter, an annual journal, as well as irregular announcements, free participation to some archaeological digs and voting rights at the annual meeting.

Members have contributed on a number of archaeological projects in the state and have proved a remarkable asset to the preservation and excavation of sites in the state. Projects for the upcoming year include the excavation of a mammoth, the Deadwood China Town, a prehistoric village in northeast South Dakota, and surveys of Northwest South Dakota. Members are also called upon in the event of emergency salvage excavations and are occasionally hired to assist with professional excavations.
